September 2023
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year at Solvay Elementary School. We are looking forward to an exciting year in physical education as we become faster, stronger, more skillful movers. The goal of physical education at Solvay Elementary is to develop in each child the physical, social, intellectual, and emotional competence that will lead to confidence and participation in physical activity for a lifetime. As your child's physical education teachers, we recognize that children are at different developmental levels with a variety of needs and interests. For this reason, our curriculum is designed to accommodate a wide range of skill and fitness levels and expose students to a variety of exciting and challenging activities.
Physical Education in the Primary Grades (K‑2)
The physical education curriculum for the primary grades will focus on fundamental movement, physical fitness, and basic motor skills. In the early grades, students will learn how to move in a variety of ways ‑‑ running, hopping, skipping, galloping, sliding, jumping, and leaping. The concepts of space, direction, speed, and pathways are also explored. Basic motor skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, volleying, and striking will also be introduced. Students are given many opportunities to practice these skills through self-practice, centers, and participation in lead‑up games. Finally, each lesson is designed to promote cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.
Physical Education in the Upper Grades (3-4)
The physical education curriculum for the third and fourth grades will emphasize the refinement of movement and motor skills as they are used in actual games and activities. Students will be provided a variety of practice opportunities as they participate in the following units: throwing and catching, soccer, sport stacking, cooperative games, volleyball, recreational games, lacrosse, softball, jumping rope, basketball, etc. Each day's activities are designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.
General Information (K‑4)
Students in grades K-4 will attend physical education twice every two and a half weeks. Students should wear sneakers on the days they have physical education. Sneakers with wheels, thick soles, or open heels are inappropriate for the physical education setting. If a student forgets to wear appropriate sneakers, he/she will not be allowed to participate in the activities for that day. Students are expected to participate in physical education unless a doctor’s note is provided excusing him/her from participation. A copy of the doctor’s note should be given to the school nurse the first day the student returns to school.
We are looking forward to working with your child in physical education. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
